Background and History
Project Limits
Plank Road is primarily a rural east–west county highway, functionally classified as a minor arterial, that traverses approximately 16.5 miles from IL 23 (Main Street in the City of Sycamore) to United States Highway 20 (US 20) in the City of Elgin. The route generally connects the DeKalb-Sycamore metropolitan area to the western suburbs of the Chicago metropolitan area. The route is primarily rural in nature except for a suburban area near Illinois Route 23 (IL 23) and an urban area in the rural community of the Village of Burlington, approximately halfway between the cities of Sycamore and Elgin. The route traverses both DeKalb County and Kane County. From IL 23 to County Line Road, the route is approximately 4.9 miles in length. Kane County has ongoing safety studies for portions of Plank Road east of the County Line. More information can be found on their Division of Transportation website here: http://kdot.countyofkane.org/Pages/Projects/Highway-Projects.aspx.
The approved logical termini of the project includes Illinois Route 23 (IL 23) at the west end of the project, to approximately 1000’ east of Lukens Road at the east end of the project, for a length of approximately 3.6 miles. Within the study limits, the existing adjacent land use is suburban from IL 23 to Lindgren Road and rural from Lindgren Road to the eastern study limits. Most of the route study limits are within the incorporated boundaries of the City of Sycamore.
